Set of 4 RARITY Antique Art Nouveau 1910s Edwardian Era porcelain different breakfast plates ‘IMARI’ / 18 cm.

Art Nouveau, ornamental style of art that flourished between about 1890 and 1910 throughout Europe and the United States. Art Nouveau is characterized by its use of a long, sinuous, organic line and was employed most often in architecture, interior design, jewelry and glass design, posters, and illustration.

The Edwardian era corresponds to the reign of King Edward VII in Great Britain, whose short-lived governance (1901-1910) followed Victoria’s long reign and preceded the modern House of Windsor in England. The “Edwardian” style broadly encompasses the years of 1901 through to 1919.

Typically Imari ware (in the English use of the term) is decorated in underglaze blue, with red, gold, black for outlines, and sometimes other colours, added in overglaze. In the most characteristic floral designs most of the surface is coloured, with “a tendency to overdecoration that leads to fussiness”.
