Vintage mid century 70s ceramic red candle holder model 148/10 by designer Cari Zalloni for Steuler.
The Steuler company was founded in Höhr-Grenzhausen by Georg Steuler in 1908 and started producing ceramics in 1917. The best-known of Steuler’s designers were Cari Zalloni and Heiner Balzaar. One of the most famous of the company’s decor ranges was the Zyklon series by Zalloni. The quality of Steuler’s product was excellent. Clay was generally white or beige, although some of the old pieces were red, and bottoms were generally tidy.
Cari Zalloni was of Greek-Italian descent and his mother was from Austria. He initially lived in Greece, but after the death of his father his mother moved back to Vienna, later they moved to Stübing in Styria. He broke off subsequent chemistry studies in order to study in the master class for design at the Academy for Applied Arts in Vienna under Professor Oswald Haerdtl. In 1960 he started working as a designer. He went to Siena in Italy, where he designed furniture, but after two years he went to Germany to work as a freelance designer. He designed various glass series for the ornamental ceramics company Steuler-Keramik in Höhr-Grenzhausen and for the glassworks Maximiliansau – a glassworks belonging to the WMF Group. In 1962 he moved to Salzburg. He was known as chief designer of the optical company CAZAL EYEWEAR. In addition, he mainly designed drinking glasses and winter sports equipment . Most recently he lived near Graz. He died as a result of heart surgery.
